ok now that one went through so I wish I had the long comment I wrote before but here I go again. The clinical aspect of the curriculum is the area I see as not meeting the needs of the students. There are many reasons which include a lack of education on the part of the facilities staff regarding "How to work with student nurses" and the varying abilities of the clinical instructor. Many times the problem is the lack of communication between the classroom instructor and the clinical instructor. The students do not always meet the needs of the facility and many times I hear that the staffing is short and the facility would like the students to do that work instead of the curriculum objectives ( I do not know if the facility even know these exist). The nurses like to teach the students and encourage the students to do procedures with them that the student is required to do with the instructor. Students are not always motivated the entire time they are in the facility and sometimes slip out the back door when the instructor is working with another student. Like "how did that Starbucks get here". The facility is intolerant of cell phone usage and has no where for the students to go to discuss patients and the care needed or stow their books. The cell phone apps are the students resources. These are a few of the reasons I have encountered in the clinical arena.
This is some of the negatives and the positives will come next week.
Jay, You will need to add more substance to these posts for them to count towards your 10-12 entries. Consider this one as testing the waters. Make sure you read the rubric and incorporate some of the creative technologies on my tools list. Is this an entry for another class? Which curriculum are you talking about. Give an overview of what the blog should incorporate.
Technology plays a major role in health care. It is very important for the nurse educators to become familiar with the emerging technologies. It is challenging for the faculty to teach the students what they themselves have learned as students are moving to increasingly automated class room and clinical environment. During the coming three to four coming weeks, I will be discussing and teaching about using various technologies using my professor’s tool box. Further we will discuss about the technology and how it can be used for student teaching.
What we know about robots? Robots in the medical field provide the benefits of consistency, reliability and the diminishing time of surgeries.FDA approved the ZEUS surgical system, it has three arms helps the surgeon doing surgeries. One arm provides internal operating field view. The other two arms hold surgical instruments. The surgeon can accomplish safety and accuracy by using robotic system. In cyborg technology, if arm or leg is lost, robotic artificial arm or leg can be used. Now problem with the technology is the communication between nervous system and robot control system, once that can be identified, many people would be benefited. The next application is called Nano technology in which the robot is sent to the body as miniature into the circulation and identifies the problems in the body. In UCSD’s ,a sociable robot successfully taught a group of toddlers ten vocabulary words in only twelve days, which was felt better than the job done by the public schools. In Philipines, the 29 robots wheeled around the classroom while speaking to the students, reading books to them, and dancing to music by moving their head and arms. As nurse educators we should inform the students about the emerging technologies and its benefits or disadvantages. What do you think about the future of Nursing? Robots may control the nursing simulation labs, takes active part in classroom teaching and what else, what is your thought about this? I proudly present A.D.A.M educational site from my Professor Tool box to educate my nurse educator graduate students. It is a learning process for the students as well as for the teachers.A.D.A.M curriculum resources is used worldwide. It is designed to increase retention for difficult subject matter. In this website when we go into A.D.A.M inside out, there is educational information on general biology, life sciences, health, physical education, sex education, and family life curriculum. Other resources include: dissectible anatomy, the inside story,3D anatomy,9 month miracle, health and wellness, smoking and tobacco use, alcohol and drug use, supplemental resources, self-assessment, and curriculum resources. Other features are interactive anatomy with demo, multimedia encyclopedia, 3D image library, and online subscription allows the viewer to use it from anywhere, anytime. Adamimages.com is one of the world’s largest libraries of medical illustrations. The teacher and student browse alphabetically to see full range of medically-accurate images, find image by keyword, add images to personnel light box, and save options for future visits. It is reviewed periodically with emerging changes. So it is valuable information for us and let us start using it to improve our knowledge with the interacting A.D.A.M technology. I would like to give information for those, bit unfamiliar with micro blogging and more importantly twitter, how it works. Twitter helps us to update the status with short messages, of up to 140 characters, like SMS message. It has social elements, allowing users to befriend with each other. When we follow somebody on twitter, we will be able to instantly receive their updates and keep up to date with someone’s status. Utmost important in Twitter is mobility and fastness. Twitter allows us to update our status via web page, IM,mobile phone, blackberry or various other third party applications. Twitter has got the following benefits: Traffic-It can provide new visitors. We can send traffic by our blog url and we can receive the number of followers we desire Awareness and branding-Helps to build brand and raise awareness. In nursing education new information can be given instantly to the students Promote your content-Teaching topics can be promoted by discussing with other education consults and promote with the students Fast help and feedback-If students need any educational guidance like reference, assignment submission dates can be informed immediately. Find new audience-Education circle can be widened using micro blog Latest news-Good way of keeping up with news and new content, educator and students can communicate the new information There are many more benefits like, informing people about the status, new working, and providing inspiration and also it is a fun. In the following blogs let us get to know about the twitter more. What is your thought about twitter? Very nice blog. I post my own blog comments as new posts. I dont lose them so easily I have found. :)
As far as twitter I am not a fan. Interestingly our board of nursing came out with a white paper on social media. It reports that disciplinary action can result in HIPPAA violations that may appear innocent or happen by accident. I use caution and little activity on social media.
How about you?

In a recent CNN article, ‘twitter finds a place in the classroom “It was reported “for lot of them ,what it did is help find their voice…many students that do not participate in classes or share what is in their mind, so twitter became that vehicle.” A survey of 1,920 U.S.teachers published in April found that 2% of them use the micro-blogging site in college lectures. About half those polled said the use of Twitter and face book in class is harmful to th learning experience, according to the study from consulting firm Pearson Learning Solutions. “So how can we balance this? Be an active listener, design for distraction, place limits. Always there are pros and cons with all social Medias. In medical field, of course HIPPA is the great issue. It should be handled cautiously. No patient information or any kind of information which calls for privacy should not be shared at twitter or any other social media. Nursing Informatics Hi Class We understand the importance of Technology in nursing education. I have introduced some concepts regarding technology and how it can be used in nursing, so it is very important to integrate the importance of technology in nursing curriculum to function in technological complexity environment. Advances in information technology over the last 25 years have created significant opportunities for nurses to be aware of current information when making decisions. Advances in information technology have created new roles for nurses. There is a need for all nurses to integrate nursing informatics competencies into their practices. Nursing Informatics is the application of computer science and information science to nursing.NI promotes the generation, management and processing of relevant data in order to use information and develop knowledge that supports nursing in all practice domains. Application of nursing informatics in the field of clinical practice, administration, education, and research are advised. Kaplan University, Nurse Informatics Graduate certificate is designed to help professional nurses prepare for a variety of new clinical, educational, research, and administrative challenges. There are 23 credit hours, and courses included are critical concepts and competencies for the informatics nurse specialist for five credit hours, innovations in educational and research technologies for five credit hours, integration of informatics into the health care environment for three credit hours, health systems project management for five credit hours, and nurse informatics specialist practicum for five credit hours. As nurse educators let us become aware of the changes taking place in technological world, and prepare the future generation integrating the importance of technology in nursing education curriculum. KEEPING UP WITH INFORMATION AND ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY Incorporating Technology in nursing curriculum is important as we know the future of nursing education and role of technology. Nurse educators should upgrade to the technological advance so that the nursing students can be guided in a right way. The NLN’s (2001) position statement regarding lifelong learning acknowledges that the “concept of lifelong learning for nursing faculty is complex and mufti-faceted”. As technology progresses, academic nurse educators must keep up with its advancement. Professional and special –interest organizations offer opportunities to stay current and network. Some organizations include: Educause: This nonprofit association’s mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. National education association: It offers a forum to discuss the role of technology in education as well as an opportunity to learn about new trends. Society for applied learning technologies: It is a professional society oriented toward professionals whose work requires knowledge and communication in the field of instructional technology.
